Submitting to the Risen King: A Kingdom Lifestyle

Everything changed that Sunday morning.

The women walked to the tomb expecting death. They found an empty grave and a message that shook the world: “He is not here. He is risen.”

That resurrection wasn’t just about Jesus coming back to life. It was a declaration. A coronation. The moment when heaven announced that Jesus is King over everything – death, sin, darkness, and every power that tries to rule our lives.

And here’s what makes this personal for you and me: This risen King invites us into His kingdom. Not someday in the distant future. Right now. Today.

But living in His kingdom means something specific. It means submitting to Him as King.

Let me show you what that looks like.

When a King Rises, Everything Shifts

Think about what the resurrection actually means. Jesus didn’t just survive crucifixion. He conquered it. He walked into the darkest place humanity knows – death itself – and came out the other side holding the keys.

Paul understood this. He wrote,

“God raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion” (Ephesians 1:20-21).

That’s kingdom language. That’s the language of a coronation.

When Jesus rose, He didn’t return as a good teacher or a prophet. He returned as the King of kings. The one with all authority in heaven and on earth (Matthew 28:18).

This matters for how we live. Because if Jesus truly is King, then submission to Him isn’t optional for His followers. It’s the only response that makes sense.

What Submission Really Means

Let’s be honest. The word “submission” makes some of us uncomfortable. It sounds like giving up control. Like becoming passive or weak.

But here’s the truth: Submitting to Jesus is the most powerful thing you can do.

When you submit to the risen King, you’re not surrendering to defeat. You’re aligning yourself with the ultimate victory. You’re stepping into the authority of the one who has already won.

Peter figured this out. Remember him? The disciple who denied Jesus three times. After the resurrection, Jesus restored him and gave him a mission:

“Feed my sheep” (John 21:17).

Peter submitted to that call. And on the day of Pentecost, this same man who once cowered before a servant girl stood up and preached with such power that three thousand people came into the kingdom.

That’s what submission to the King does. It doesn’t diminish you. It empowers you with His authority and His Spirit.

Living as Kingdom Citizens

So what does kingdom lifestyle actually look like? How do you submit to the risen King in practical, everyday ways?

It starts with a shift in how you see yourself. You’re not just a believer. You’re a citizen of a different kingdom. Paul said it this way:

“Our citizenship is in heaven” (Philippians 3:20).

That means you operate by different rules now. The kingdom of God has its own economy, its own values, and its own way of doing things. And they’re often upside down from what the world teaches.

In God’s kingdom, the last are first. The weak are strong. Givers are blessed more than takers. Servants are the greatest. Those who lose their life find it (Matthew 16:25).

This isn’t just poetry. It’s how things actually work when Jesus is King of your life.

The Power of His Presence

Here’s where it gets exciting. When you submit to Jesus as King, you don’t do it alone. You don’t muster up willpower and try harder to be good.

No. The risen King sends His Holy Spirit to live inside you.

Jesus promised this before He ascended:

“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you” (Acts 1:8).

That’s not just power to witness. It’s the power to live. Power to change. Power to become the person God created you to be.

This is what sets kingdom living apart. Other religions tell you to follow rules and hope you measure up. The kingdom of God gives you the Spirit of the King Himself, dwelling in you, empowering you, and transforming you from the inside out.

When you wake up in the morning, His presence is there. When you face decisions, His wisdom guides you. When you encounter darkness, His light shines through you. When you’re weak, His strength sustains you.

That’s the beauty of submitting to a living King. He doesn’t just give you a rulebook and walk away. He walks with you. He lives in you.

Living by Kingdom Values

So how does this work day to day? What does submission look like when you’re at work, at home, in relationships, or making decisions?

Let me paint you a picture through the life of the early church. After the resurrection, after Pentecost, these believers didn’t retreat into religious isolation. They invaded their world with kingdom reality.

They loved radically. Acts tells us they shared everything they had.

“There were no needy persons among them” (Acts 4:34).

That’s kingdom economics. In a world that hoards, they gave freely.

They prayed expectantly. They didn’t just go through religious motions. They expected God to move. And He did. Signs and wonders followed them. The sick were healed. Demons fled. People were set free. That’s kingdom power breaking into everyday life.

They lived boldly. When authorities threatened them, they said,

“We must obey God rather than human beings” (Acts 5:29).

They knew who their real King was. That knowledge gave them courage the world couldn’t understand.

They served humbly. There was no pecking order in their kingdom mindset. The greatest among them looked for ways to serve others. That’s what Jesus modelled. That’s what His followers practised.

The Daily Practice of Surrender

Here’s where the rubber meets the road. Submitting to the risen King isn’t a one-time decision. It’s a daily practice. It’s choosing, moment by moment, to let Him lead.

Some days this feels natural. You wake up aware of His presence. Prayer flows easily. His peace fills you.

Other days it’s a fight. Your own desires pull you one way. The world’s values shout at you. Old habits tempt you. Fear whispers that you should take back control.

Those are the moments that define kingdom living. Because submission is most real when it costs you something.

Jesus knew this. He told His followers,

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23).

Daily. Not once at a conversion experience. Daily.

This is where the adventure really begins. Because every time you choose His way over yours, you discover something amazing. His way works better. His peace is deeper. His joy is fuller. His path, even when it’s hard, leads to life.

Kingdom Authority in Your Life

Here’s something powerful: When you submit to the King, you carry His authority.

Jesus said,

“I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy” (Luke 10:19).

That’s not a metaphor. That’s real spiritual authority that comes from being under His authority.

Think about a Roman soldier. He had authority not because of his personal power, but because he represented Rome. He stood under the authority of Caesar. When he spoke, Caesar spoke through him.

You’re the same with Jesus. When you live submitted to Him, His authority flows through you. You can speak peace to storms in your life. You can resist the enemy and watch him flee (James 4:7). You can pray for the sick and see healing. You can speak truth and watch it set people free.

But – and this is crucial – that authority only flows when you’re submitted. When you’re living in your own strength, doing your own thing, you have no kingdom authority. You’re just another voice in the noise.

Submission is the key that unlocks kingdom power in your life.

The Joy of Obedience

Let’s talk about something that might surprise you. Submitting to Jesus is actually joyful.

I know that sounds backwards. We think submission means giving up what makes us happy. But the opposite is true.

Jesus said,

“I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete” (John 15:11).

He was talking about remaining in Him. About staying connected to Him. About living under His lordship.

Why is this joyful? Because when you submit to Jesus, you discover who you really are. You step into your true identity. You start living the life you were created for.

The world promises joy through independence. “Be your own boss. Follow your own truth. Do what feels right.” But that path leads to emptiness. To confusion. To a constant search for something that satisfies.

Kingdom living is different. When Jesus is King and you’re walking in obedience to Him, there’s a deep satisfaction. A sense of rightness. You’re not constantly second-guessing yourself. You’re not wrestling with anxiety about the future. You know who you are and whose you are.

That’s not to say everything becomes easy. Kingdom living often means swimming against the current. But there’s joy in knowing you’re on the right path. Joy in seeing God work. Joy in being part of something bigger than yourself.

Breakthrough and Transformation

When you fully embrace the kingdom lifestyle, something shifts. Not just in your circumstances, but in you.

The Spirit begins a deep work of transformation. Paul described it this way:

“We all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory” (2 Corinthians 3:18).

This is the promise. As you fix your eyes on the risen King, as you submit to His leadership, as you let His Holy Spirit work in you, you become more like Him.

Old patterns break. Things that used to control you lose their grip. Fear gives way to faith. Anger transforms into peace. Pride melts into humility. Anxiety surrenders to trust.

This isn’t instant. It’s a journey. But it’s a journey of increasing freedom. Of growing into your true self. Of becoming the person God designed you to be.

And here’s what’s beautiful: As you change, your world changes. Your family notices. Your coworkers see something different. People start asking what happened to you.

That’s kingdom breakthrough. That’s the light of the risen King shining through a submitted life.

Living in Two Kingdoms

Here’s the tension we all face. We’re kingdom citizens, but we still live in the world. We’re under the authority of the risen King, but we also navigate earthly systems and structures.

How do we balance this?

Jesus gave us the key:

“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s” (Mark 12:17).

We honour earthly authority. We pay taxes. We follow laws. We’re good citizens.

But we always remember: Jesus is our ultimate authority. When earthly demands conflict with kingdom values, we choose the kingdom. Every time.

This is where discernment matters. Where you need the Holy Spirit’s wisdom. Where you lean on other believers who are on the same journey.

Sometimes submission to the King means taking a stand. Sometimes it means serving quietly. Sometimes it means speaking truth. Sometimes it means patient endurance.

The key is staying connected to Him. Listening for His voice. Following His lead.

The Call to Come Alive

The resurrection changed everything. It proved that Jesus is who He claimed to be. It demonstrated His power over every enemy. It opened the door for you and me to enter His kingdom.

But here’s the thing: You can know all this and still not experience it. You can believe Jesus is King and still try to run your own life. You can call Him Lord and not submit to His leadership.

This is the invitation. This is the moment. Will you let the risen King truly be King in your life?

Not just in the big decisions. In everything. In how you spend your time. How you use your money. How you treat people. What you think about. What you pursue. How you respond when things go wrong.

Will you submit everything to Him?

This isn’t about perfection. You’ll stumble. You’ll have moments where you grab back control. That’s part of the journey. But the question is: What’s your direction? Are you moving toward greater surrender or greater independence?

The kingdom of God is here. It’s available. It’s real. And you can step into it fully, starting right now.

Your Next Step

So let me ask you directly: What area of your life needs to come under the King’s authority?

Maybe it’s your finances. You know you’re supposed to trust Him, but fear keeps you clinging to control.

Maybe it’s a relationship. You need to forgive, to love, to let go, but you’re holding on to hurt.

Maybe it’s your future. You sense God calling you somewhere, but you’re resisting because it feels risky.

Maybe it’s your daily habits. You know some things need to change, but you keep putting it off.

Whatever it is, today is the day. Right now is the moment. The risen King is inviting you to bring that area under His leadership.

Here’s how you do it: You talk to Him. Simply. Honestly. You say, “Jesus, You’re King. I submit this to You. Lead me. Show me what You want. Give me the courage to obey.”

Then you listen. And when He speaks – through His Word, through His Spirit, through wise counsel – you act.

That’s kingdom living. That’s what disciples do. They hear the King’s voice, and they follow.

The resurrection wasn’t just a historical event. It was the beginning of a new reality. A reality where death is defeated, sin is broken, and a new way of life is possible.

You were made for this kingdom. You were created to live under the loving leadership of the risen King. This is where you come fully alive. This is where you discover your purpose. This is where you experience the abundant life Jesus promised.

The King is risen. He’s alive. He’s calling you.

Will you submit? Will you follow? Will you let Him be King of every part of your life?

The choice is yours. But I can tell you this: When you fully surrender to Him, when you stop fighting for control and start trusting His leadership, everything changes.

You step into a life of power, purpose, and peace. A life that makes a difference. A life that counts for eternity.

That’s the kingdom lifestyle. And it’s waiting for you.

So here’s your call to action: Take one specific area of your life today and consciously place it under Jesus’s authority. Pray about it. Maybe write it down. Tell someone you trust what you’re committing to. Then watch what the risen King does when you give Him permission to lead.

This is how kingdom living begins. One choice. One area. One step of submission.

And then another. And another. Until your whole life is a testimony to the power and goodness of the risen King.

He’s waiting. The kingdom is ready. Your moment is now.

Will you submit to the risen King and live the kingdom lifestyle you were created for?

The adventure starts today.
